History
The name St Tropez evokes rather a past behind its name,
you could say that it has 2 faces those of the past
and present. Occupied first by the Phoceans, then by
the Romans up until the legend of a headless body of
a Torpes knight was found washed ashore near to the
port, since then history has favoured the myth. This
small fishing port founded by the Greeks of Marseille
was invaded and destroyed by the Saracens between 7th
to the 9th century. In 980 it was freed by William 1st,
Count of Provence who had Suffren castle built. It was
then plundered by the barbary pirates and after being
reconstituted in 1470 was then entrusted to 21 Genoese
families.
St Tropez then remained an independent Republic until
1672. Then whilst under the reign of Louis 16th Pierre
Andres de Suffren, commander in chief of the royal fleet
and later general Allard, under Napolean rule, these
became the first 'famous Tropezians'. In 1860 the Angles
Queen, a 740 ton three mast sailing ship for the merchant
navy was built in St Tropez. Throughout the centuries
the inhabitants developed a successful business economy
: ie. fishing, shipbuilding, agricultural trade, commercial
and nowadays tourism plays a major part. This little
port which is well known all over the world has only
5,900 inhabitants in a area of 1117 hectares. To buy
a flat or house in the town centre it will cost you
anything between 2 150 € and 3 900 € a sq
metre. Some of the finest houses and most prestigious
villas are situated in a triangle in and around the
'bay of Cannebiers' 'the Rabion point and the headlands
of Salins (le cap), where in these luxurious parks of
St Tropez, villas will sell for 1 525 000 € or
more.
Leisure / Culture
To visit St Tropez, a slow stroll is recommended through
the small streets where you'll find traces of the past
and some very 'fashionable' boutiques In 1892 The artist
Paul Signac decided to stay on after being forced to
stop due to bad weather at sea. After creating his art
studio he summoned his friends to the brightly coloured
little port, The painters Matisse and Marquet were the
first to respond to his appeal, they were then followed
by many others. They did so with the clear idea of assembling
their works in a local museum. The marvellous Annociade
museum is housed in a early 16th century chapel imaginatively
renovated for the purpose. From above the Citadelle
there is a superb view over the entire Gulf of St Tropez
and a pleasant walk in amongst the peacocks roaming
free. In May there the Military Bravade that lasts for
3 days, this Religious and Military event unites the
Tropeziens and their memories. All throughout the summer
season the quays are decorated with some of the most
beautiful yachts anchored in the port. The 'Jet set'
can be found on the various well known beaches :
de Pampelonne, la Bouillabaisse, les Graniers, les Cannebiers,
les Treilles de la Moutte covering up to approx 5km
in total. Also in May are the folklore fairs they take
event just before the St Tropez Gulf Cup takes place.
In June there's the famous St Tropez rolex cup, that
will display the famous 12m J.I. at the end of July
the The Riva runnabout cup, where Carlo Riva will show
off his prestigious motorboats. At the end of August
there's the Antique fair that gets bigger and bigger
each year. In the Autumn there's the St Tropez polo
masters tournament in Gassin. At the end of September
beginning of October there is a gathering of old and
modern sailing ships, also on show a new edition of
